What is pallet density and why does it matter?
Density is total weight divided by total cubic feet. LTL pricing is built around density because a trailer runs out of space before it runs out of weight. Denser freight generally carries a lower class and a lower cost basis.
How many pallet positions fit on a trailer?
A 53-foot dry van holds about 26 standard 48x40 pallet positions on the floor, roughly 13 linear-foot pairs. Non-standard footprints, non-stackable freight and overhang reduce that count.
Does stacking always reduce cost?
Only when the freight can carry the load safely and the carrier accepts the configuration. Stacking reduces floor positions and linear feet, but crush risk, product damage and carrier rules have to be confirmed first.
When should a shipment move from LTL to partial or full truckload?
Once a shipment approaches roughly 6 to 8 pallet positions or 8,000 to 12,000 pounds, a partial or full truckload structure often prices better than an LTL tariff and removes terminal handling.
