Indicated class is a density-based read-out under the 13-break density scale. It is not an NMFC determination and no rate, cost-per-mile figure or transit guarantee is published. A coordinator verifies classification and pricing in writing.
Freight classification questions
How is freight class calculated?
Cubic feet equals length x width x height per handling unit, multiplied by units, divided by 1,728. Density equals total weight divided by total cubic feet. The resulting pounds per cubic foot maps to a class on the 13-break density scale, from Class 50 at 50 lb/ft³ and above down to Class 400 and below at very low density.
Is the indicated class the same as an NMFC class?
No. Density is the starting point. The published NMFC item, packaging, stowability, handling and liability characteristics can move the final class. Provide the NMFC item number when you know it so the classification can be verified.
Why does reclassification happen after pickup?
Carriers inspect and reweigh freight. Wrong dimensions, missed stacking restrictions, unlisted accessorials or a density near a break point are the most common causes of a corrected invoice.
